Behind the Ink

I have always been drawn to Tattoo’s. When I was in my 20’s I got my first, but I never went again. The era was different then but if I was in my twenties today, I’d probably have a whole sleeve and various significant works of art abundantly visible. So, here we are and I’m not about to start getting Inked again now. But my appreciation of what these scriptures mean to people and the importance of the deep symbolism behind some of them still intrigues. In a way, it completes the person and communicates their identity. Perhaps this is my fascination with them. I want to know the story behind the Ink and get to know them better by way of understanding and photographing their tattoo’s.

A recent opportunity to do so came about when friends came over for dinner. A young couple in their twenties that my wife met when sequestered in Jury Duty. It was a murder trial and a life intensifying moment for all the jurors and their families. This couple met during the trial and are now close friends of the family as a result of the unique situation. Jessie has the nape of her neck and back tatted with her Juror number and the balance of justice sign as the marker of this chapter of her life. These are the shots from that dinner, their friendship, and a prelude to upcoming wedding plans. They are just quick snapshots, but I plan to shoot more Tattoo culture as a subject matter for many years to come.
